ah here we go, the 2011 edition of Professional Photography (talking edition)
article: Phil Patel covers the second American Civil War
"Warzone photography needs a reliable camera, and I've found the Shizu Quan "Happy Sunflower" model meet my exacting standards every time.." he laughs, "I once used a camera made by a now defunct manufacturer called Nokia which was pretty good, and there was another one - Samsang.. samyang - can't remember, that had a fantastic zoom, which was important in war zone photography where media access zones and refreshment tents can be quite some distance from the fighting, but these new Shizu's are a dream!"
Phil goes on to reboot his phone and shows me the Microsoft Pict-O-Matic function "Sure it's expensive buying your images back from Microsoft, but the quality is worth it and they do a fantastic job of putting the people and bodies and stuff in the scene in just the right locations to make a good image" He explains that given that all captured images are normally owned by the phone provider, routing the data through the MS Pict-O-Matic servers who have an agreement with all the worlds phone-net providers automatically transfers the rights to Microsoft - and then they work their magic.
"I used the Kwan Do Sing syndicated network for some time and their Image-spectacular (formerly Adobe pre-acquisition) seemed good at the time as they were cheaper, but the transmogrificat-O-Skill algorithms just don't cut it in the fast paced world of pro photography - people want to see exciting images and they want them fast!"
He adds that using the Microsoft network saves time in getting his images published as the media conglomerate NewsNow! is actually a Microsoft subsidiary, so it's quite cost effective buying back his rights temporarily before reselling them to Microsoft thus incurring no WoldBank Earn-O-Interest fees.
"Economics are probably the most critical part of being a photographer these days" he says "the Image making algorithms are critical too, it's really all about finding the balance between the two"
Phil shows me his last award winning shot of the Mohave desert before the glaciers "they're gone now" he says of the massive Joshua trees "the glaciers just ate 'em up, but Pict-O-Matic put 'em right back where they should be on baking desert sands - how cool is that?"
He concludes "For a photographer to make it in correspondence or warzone photography they have to have the best stuff, I'd recommend anyone trying to get into this game buy themselves a Shizu or if they're on a budget maybe a set of the LongTan Glasses-Fone (the Pink Kity model or the Warm Potato) and get themselves on a Pict-O-Matic supported network. I'd also recommend seeing lots of good movies as it gives you ideas for realistic newsworthy photographs.. I mean, if you can't imagine up a good scene to start with Pict-O-Matic can work as hard as it likes, you won't automatically get yourself a good image! - Also try to visit the scene of the news for real to get a feel of the place.. it's pretty important"
Phil is located in Greenland where he photographs most of the worlds breaking news events, occasionally travelling to actual locations for that elusive feel (All story rights 2011 Professional Photography)
