Thought it was time I had a pretty picture at the top but I made a daggy one instead - hope you like it as much as I don't.
I just realised, if mobiles had been around in the 1950's, they would have had cigarette lighters built in!
Gold Dunhill numbers would have been in the hands of the well to do, while Bic and Cricket would have vied for the low end of the market. Of course the Bic would have had the same reputation as Nokia enjoys today, but Crickets would have been favoured by those who just liked them.
No it's not as silly as I think it sounds, anyone remember Hedy Lamarr? Star of many Hollywood movies (including the first movie showing a nude - her), it turns out she also had some of the good stuff floating around her scone - in 1942 while trying to work out how she could contribute to the war effort she dreampt up the concept of spread spectrum wireless technology. Of course Patent Number 2,292,387 was immediately stamped 'Secret' and hidden from the world for 60 years, but at the time her technological achievement helped the allies torpedo enemy ships.
Nowdays it forms tha backbone of wireless internet, mobile phones, bluetooth and a raft of other kewl technomological things for teenagers to skite about, but imagine if it were available immediately after the war?
But I digress - I've decided I want a phone with a lighter in it. I mean ringtones are fine and all (except that f@#ckn frog thing) but lose the damned games and bung in a butane cylinder! It's not any more dangerous than phones are already, after all batteries explode, gas lighers explode - big deal.
The first Nokia I had was pretty sad - just sounded like a phone or a space invaders game when it rang, but my latest is somewhat better. Although it only plays midi's there are some great sites offering some pretty convincing versions of the BeeGee's "Tragedy" or Patrick Hernandez' "born to Be Alive" but after a while you feel like a dick because everyone else has a real mp3 version in their real mp3 phone which CRAPS on a midi version.. and anyway, song's are always a bit iffy.
I mean it's OK when you're actually in that mood where you're all melancholy and remembering some hot, big-haired, sweatbanded, puffy shirt wearing 80's babe from some disco long ago and at the time you think it'd be all romantic to listen to Dollar's "Shooting Star" when the phone rings, but when you're hanging with your oily mates discussing the advantages of a big bore rifle over high velocity small bore for stopping pigs and your mum calls - !
The other week I managed to find some crazy bastard who'd gone to the effort of building ALL the music from the game "Unreal" as midi's so I grabbed my fave and loaded on my phone thinking how cool it would be, but I didn't think it through because the phone goes off at the most unexpected times and that particular track scares the CRAP out of me! Screaming and running away from your phone looks pretty stupid, and my wife refuses to answer it unless I get her a flak cannon, so I should change it sometime soon.
Yeah, and my character is called Bloat - So what? The short one always refuses to play with Queazy, Ntestyne, Speoo or Splooge, and she laughs at MrFoo, Flopsy Rabbit, Dickless and Oompie so all that's left is Bloat and Noddy.
nyeah - her loss..
I haven't actually played Unreal for a while now as I got so engrossed with Diablo LOD again, and man I DO love the new 1.10 patch! My little trapass (hehe, that always makes me laugh) sorry - my trap assassin is now L87 and kicks butt nicely and the other day I decided to kill my least favourite monster-boss, the prick, hip thrusting drop-nothing blue cricket Duriel and much to my surprise he dropped a SHITLOAD of goodies when he karked it! The last time the mean little shit died By My Hand he dropped zip - nothing, nada - so I really LOVE the new patch! ..little fckr, think I might just go kill him again..
Filbert the necro is STILL the best monster-killer though :)
Anyway, I had this really cool cheap plastic lighter I bought in Canada 10 years ago that was only about 4mm thick - I think I'll just superglue one like that to my nokia then I can have my dream come true! Only prob is I have to find one.. the one I had blew up one day - I think there's still a bit of it in my thigh.
